1938: Purchased
the Girls’ Clubhouse located at 82 Carroll Street for $8,500.
Based upon our sponsorship of the Girls’ Club, they were invited
to become one of the Community Chests agencies.
2. Collected
and shipped a large assortment of medical supplies for British and
Greek War Relief.
3. Assisted the
Girls’ Club Board of Directors in purchasing their new Clubhouse
at 28 Frederick Street by donating $1,000 cash and furnishing one
of the kitchens at a cost of $650.
4. Purchased
25-acre camp, complete with buildings and lake, on Johnson Road in
Town of Kirkwood, and presented it to the Binghamton Boys’ Club.
The property cost $20,000. The Boys’ Club Board of Directors
made the down payment of $6,000 and we assumed the $14,000 mortgage.
5. Held Binghamton
Press Paper Sale. Gave $2,500 toward Camp Sertoma mortgage.
6. Held Press
Paper Sale. Gave $1,250 toward Camp Sertoma mortgage. Celebrated National
Freedom Week by presenting a framed copy of the Declaration of Independence
to the Mayor, Donald W. Kramer, Club members conducted “Service
Fund Project” each member doing a service voluntarily. Funds
used to assist Boys at Camp Sertoma. Total amount raised $500.
7. Held Press
Paper Sale. Results $1,750. Contributed $1,000 to the Camp Sertoma
mortgage. Sponsored Triple Baseball Game at Johnson field to establish
a Tommy Saxby fund. About $400 was realized from this benefit. Tommy
Saxby and his mother were very badly burned when their house was destroyed
by fire. Mrs. Saxby died as a result.
1960: Won the
International Exhibit Award at the Miami, Fl. convention. The officers
of the “Junior Sertoma Club” were taken to the International
Convention in Miami, Fl. At a cost of $1,724. Held Press Paper Sale,
raised $1,695. Gave $1,000 to the Camp Sertoma mortgage. Chartered
a CBAC Club in Afton, NY with our club members contributing $168.
8. Purchased
an additional 50 acres of land adjacent to Camp Sertoma for future
expansion plans. Chartered the Binghamton Breakfast Club as a CBAC
project. Held Press Paper Sale, raising $2,000. Gave $2,500 to Camp
Sertoma mortgage.
9. Chartered
the Endicott Sertoma Club. Service to Mankind Award winner won the
District Award for Mrs. Evelyn Storer. Held annual Press Paper Sale
and netted $3,400. Gold Honor Award won by the Club. Spent approximately
$3,000 on Auditorium at Camp Sertoma. Sold tickets for symphony and
made $365.
10. Loaned $1,000
to the Jr. Sertoma Club scholarship fund. Paid $20,000 mortgage in
full on the Auditorium at Camp Sertoma and burned the mortgage on
this building.
11. Essay contest
in area schools. $30,900 presented to Tom Saxby on 25th birthday from
trust. Press Paper Sale nets $2,900. Auction $1,200, Radio Day $600.
12. $1,900 donated
to R.S.I. Million Dollar Antique Show begins. $8,000 netted in first
year.
1985: First club
in New York State to have women as members.
13. Purchased
three TTY’s for Southern Tier Independence Center. $33,000 donated
to Camp Sertoma for new boys’ and girls’ bathrooms and
showers and new septic system. Antique show nets $12,000. Club participates
in valet parking for R.S.I. “Slam” Stewart album conceptualized
in September and finished by late November. Slam died December 10,
1987. Signing Santa sponsored at the Oakdale Mall Annual Event.
14. At the February
Antique Show, “The Cats Are Swingin” limited edition is
introduced. October 2nd Salute to “Slam” Stewart at the
Anderson Center for the Arts at SUNY Binghamton and National Release
of “The Cats are Swingin’”
15. Antique Show
nets $13,000. Sallie Connelly wins Regional Secretary of the Year.
Sponsored the Regional Sertoma Convention with ethnic heritage as
the theme, nets $10,000 and is huge success. Valet Parking continues
to grow, nets $8,385. Signing Santa at the mass very successful as
participation grows.

Antique Show nets $17,000 for a total of $122,000 over eight years.
$10,000 donated to Camp Sertoma, $1,500 donated to R.S.I. TTY donated
to BOCES for use by deaf students. “Slam” Stewart’s
“The Cats are Swingin’” now available on compact
disc.
